Cars at Summer in the City
A visual study of the cars that keep bringing me back to Steinbach.
This was my fifth year attending Summer in the City in Steinbach, Manitoba. During the first few years, my friends would laugh at the idea of me travelling to such a remote place—let alone visiting Winnipeg, the largest city in the province. Believe it or not, I once found myself in a heated argument about the merits of visiting Manitoba. Five years later, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened again.
I was first invited to Heat The Streetz, the dance competition held during Steinbach’s Summer in the City festival. Picture your typical small-town summer festivities: rides, food trucks, crowds—and cars. Lots of them. An unusually high number of cars, if we were measuring per capita.
During breaks from the competition, I would walk around and look at them. For years, I never had the reflex to photograph any of it. I simply never brought my camera.
Then this year happened.
Surprisingly, the classic cars were not what first caught my eye—or my lens. It was the Subarus, Mitsubishis, and other JDM models displayed throughout the festival. The quality of the builds, and the attention given to them, whether classic, import, or otherwise, was fantastic to observe.
Here are a few of the cars that make me want to return for a sixth year—and, inevitably, argue with my friends about Manitoba all over again.
